The Monkey and the Fish
Dave Gibbons (Zondervan 2009)

In this groundbreaking book, Dave Gibbons encourages the church to become “third culture” – to clearly demonstrate the love of God through an ability to “love, learn, and serve in any culture, even in the midst of pain and discomfort.” Gibbons challenges the church and church leaders to go into places that make them feel uncomfortable in order to love the people in those places like Jesus would. If you’d like to become more incarnational and “liquid” in your leadership, this book is a great read.

"If your church is serious about reaching the unchurched, you must be willing to put up with people who have a lot of problems…Fishing is often messy and smelly. Many churches want the fish they catch to be already scaled, gutted, cleaned, and cooked. That is why they never reach anyone." - Rick Warren

"You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father." - Matthew 5:14-16 (NLT)

"Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you." - Isaiah 60:1-2 (NIV)

“Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.” - Edmund Burke

“Some wish to live within the sound of a chapel bell; I wish to run a rescue mission within a yard of hell.” - C.T. Studd

Only 19 percent of teenagers who regularly attend church do not have parents who regularly attend church. - (Thom and Sam Rainer, Essential Church, B&H Publishing, 2008)

“A tiny group of believers who have the gospel keep mumbling it over and over to themselves. Meanwhile, millions who have never heard it once fall into the flames of eternal hell without ever hearing the salvation story.” - K.P. Yohannon

“We no longer have a coherent conception of ourselves, and our universe, and our relation to one another and our world. We no longer know, as the Middle Ages did, where we come from, and where we are going, or why. That is, we don't know what information is relevant, and what information is irrelevant to our lives.” - Neil Postman
