Surviving the marathon of youth ministry
by Doug Fields
For the last 10 years, I've been very thankful for our outstanding youth ministry. Our pastor to students, Doug Fields, is a veteran youth worker, author, and trainer and I've asked him to help me with the ToolBox -- Here's Doug: "Running a marathon is a fitting picture of youth ministry. It’s not an easy task within the church. If it were, we’d have more youth workers than ushers. Youth ministry is filled with long, tiring, often unrewarding, complex, unique, intense, humorous, joy-filled, and painful experiences. Many within the body of Christ enter the youth ministry marathon, but many quit before long, having lost joy and satisfaction. They're wounded and weary ..." [more]

Developing a youth ministry that lasts
by Jim  Burns

Jim Burns has been a longtime friend of mine (Doug Fields) who set me on the course of youth ministry over 20 years ago. He knows a lot about building into teenagers; I'm a product of his giftedness. I wasn't the ideal student in his ministry, but he saw something in me that I didn't. He breathed life into me by believing in me. The following excerpt isn't just writing, it's been practiced and birthed in my life. It's from Jim’s book called "The Youth Builder." [more]

Purpose-Driven Youth Ministry
Doug Fields (Zondervan, 1998)

In this best selling book (it was also CBA’s Gold Medallion Leadership Book of the Year), Doug reveals the essentials for a healthy, Purpose-Driven Youth Ministry. If you are passionate about building a ministry that fulfills the five scriptural purposes of evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, ministry and worship, you will discover a proven team approach that reduces burnout and incorporates the strengths of the church as a whole. Being Purpose Driven is a flexible and exhaustive approach to building a healthy, self-sustaining youth ministry based on nine components: Power of God, Purpose, Potential Audience, Programs, Process, Planned Values, Participating Leaders, Parents and Perseverance. If you want to build a healthy youth ministry, this is a book your entire leadership team should read.

Controlled Chaos
Kurt Johnston (Standard, 2001)

Controlled Chaos is a diary of wisdom straight from the heart of a 14-year veteran of Junior High ministry (and the JH pastor at Saddleback Church). In his book, Kurt Johnston not only shares the wisdom he has learned, but the “why” and “how” that make it true and effective. The design of this book moves away from the come-let-me-tell-you-how-smart-I-am approach to the let’s-evaluate-your-ministry-together mentoring style. At the end of each chapter, Kurt has put a few questions for youth workers to chew on that will help them evaluate their own ministries in light of what they have just read. Because of Kurt’s humble mentoring approach and his keen wisdom, this book is a great find for junior high youth workers - paid and volunteer, veteran and newbie.

Your First Two Years in Youth Ministry
Doug Fields (Zondervan, 2002)

Hands-down the most comprehensive companion to not only surviving, but also thriving, during the most crucial phase of youth ministry. Doug disarmingly relates stories and principles from his own successes and failures over 20-plus years in youth ministry. In the end, he offers treasure troves of practical advice, all in the hope that new youth workers (both paid and volunteer) can travel a smoother path and achieve real longevity in a church culture that all too often chews them and spits them out.

Inside Saddleback: Study helps for Bible students - Todd Wendorff

"It would seem that the grim reality of the effects of smoking would serve as a danger sign to our children and teens, leading them to say no to tobacco use. But judging from the statistics relating to tobacco use among teens, kids riding on the highway from childhood to adulthood are driving right past the danger signs and into an unhealthy adulthood .... Teenagers want desperately to be adults. Smoking is a quick, yet dangerous, path that many are taking in an effort to ‘grow up’ and appear older than they are." - Walt Mueller, "Understanding Today's Youth Culture"

"Just make sure you don't tell on me especially to members of your family. We best keep this to ourselves and not tell any members of our inner posse. I wish I could tell the world cuz you're such a pretty thing when you're done up properly. I might want to marry you one day if you watch that weight and keep your firm body." - Lyrics from Alanis Morissette's song "Hands Clean"

ALANIS MORISSETTE said that "Hands Clean," the first single from her new album, "Under Rug Swept," addresses a relationship she had with an unnamed record company exec when she was an aspiring teenage pop singer. "It was a little bit scary to share it, but I think it was ultimately a freeing experience," Morissette told Rolling Stone. "It was finally being able to express what actually happened and what the dynamic of the relationship was. It was definitely not written for the sake of revenge. It was written for the sake of liberation. The act of writing it was very healing for me." - Rolling Stone's daily e-mail, March 6, 2002

"I wasn’t gonna go 40 days and 40 nights. It made me a little bit crazy, you know what I mean? It made me understand some of the feelings—just the deprivation. You’re depriving yourself of this one thing, and it becomes all you can think about." Actor Josh Hartnett, who appears in the movie "40 Days and 40 Nights", speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his self imposed chastity in preparing for the role he played in the movie. - Entertainment Weekly

"What is a functional family? I know I’m dysfunctional by a long shot, but what guidelines do we all have to go by? The Waltons? What I'm trying to say is, what is the family that we should all take our inspiration from?" -Ozzy Osbourne, of Black Sabbath fame and now starring in his own family’s television show on MTV (Tuesdays from 10:30-11:00pm). - Associated Press
